We tested laptops from 3 lbs (1.4 kilos) in the laboratory to find out which of these machines ultralight offers more. Is our selection? Say no following in the footsteps of the Air.

Lenovo ThinkPad X300

Perhaps the sober Thinkpad X300 does not have the style and Spartan-thin MacBook Air, but since its construction, the rock-solid until its many features, the laptop offers just about everything of interest to those traveling on business. The Air and Dell Inspiron 1750 battery do have some similarities. Both have 13.3-inch screens, although the X300 has a higher resolution 1440 x 900 pixels to 1,280 x 800 of the Air "and the two machines you can get a 64GB drive transistor.

The X300's keyboard is resistant to spills, the outside, textured carbon fiber and fiberglass, to protect the interior. Unlike most ultraportables, this machine has markers eraser head style and Dell Inspiron 1525 battery. The keyboard feels great, with normal sized keys. The X300 is a little heavy for a true ultraportable, and which is 2.5 inches thick and weighs 1.5 kilos or 1.8 kilos with an AC adapter, against the 1.4 kilos of the Air.

With a Core 2 Duo L7100 1.2 GHz and 2GB of RAM, the X300 achieved a score of 64 on our WorldBench 6 benchmark, surpassing the Air by 7 points. Its Dell Inspiron 1526 battery lasted 4 hours, 22 minutes in our tests, an average mark for the ultra. What the X300 lacks in style, compared with the Air, which more than offset by their best features and functionality.

Asus U2E

Come on, slide your hands along the outside of the Asus U2E Leather. The splendid cover of this ultraportable and long list of extras will make you think you are playing a team of luxury. But beyond style, find other sexy things. Compaq HP 6510b battery weighs only 1.3 kilos and the weight with AC adapter only goes to 1.6 kilos. It has a glossy widescreen display of 1,366 by 768 pixels. As with the VAIO VGN-TZ295N Sony's screen is easy to see in tight spaces, but no backlight LED generated.

The U2E is not as complete a package as the VAIO, but it is much cheaper, with a reasonable price of U.S. $ 1,999. Score of 53 which won the WorldBench 6 U2ES put it in the middle of the group of ultraportables we tested, but still quite slow for Compaq HP nc6120 battery in general. What saved this machine was not to classify the battery life in our tests, nothing more and nothing less than 7 hours, 11 minutes with the larger of the two batteries included.

This is better than 50 percent that the average duration of the ultraportables we've tested. This computer has a built-in Webcam, a fingerprint reader and a HMDI port to connect the laptop to a TV or one of the few PC monitors that use that connection. The Compaq HP nc6230 battery is a pleasant, elegant and durable, and distinctive design that is, the unusual leather covering the characterization should draw the attention of many people, though perhaps not fans of Apple extreme.
